A Simple Error with Potentially Catastrophic Consequences

In polyurethane manufacturing and processing, one of the most serious mistakes that can occur during material changeovers, drum or IBC replacement, maintenance activities, or production start up is connecting the wrong raw material supply to a day tank or bulk feed system.

While this may initially appear to be a simple line connection error, the consequences can be far more severe than producing a batch of off-specification foam. If an isocyanate IBC is accidentally connected to a polyol day tank, or a polyol IBC is connected to an isocyanate day tank, a chemical reaction can begin within storage and transfer equipment that was never designed to contain an active polyurethane reaction.
