Polyurethanes are a remarkably versatile polymer which can range from hard to soft, solid to low density foams. Polyurethanes are all around us, playing a vital role in many industries - from ship building to footwear, construction to cars. They appear in an astonishing variety of forms, a variety that is ever increasing.
Unrivaled insulating values, exceptional abrasion resistance, superior adhesion, high sound and energy absorption and low part weights are some of the unique properties that our customers take advantage of, when manufacturing with polyurethane systems. Polyurethanes are also finding increased applications with low weight but high strength/stiffness reinforced composites in all types of industries.
The following section presents a brief summary of a range of applications and typical properties that can be achieved, with different polyurethane systems.
Rigid Foams (PU Rigid)
Rigid foams can range from low density foams (10-100kg/m3) for packaging, fridges, Eskies etc. to high density foams (101-1000kg/m3) for structural components, LNG pipe supports, simulated wood moldings, Ute tonneau covers etc. Rigid Foams are predominately used by industry for their excellent insulation values and high weight to strength properties.
Flexible Foams (PU Flex)
Flexible foams can also range in densities similar to rigid foams but are used for applications such as mattresses, pillows, flexible filters, head rests and sound absorption and shoe soles to name a few. Integral skins are a special type of flexible foam which forms a tough elastomeric membrane surrounding a low density foam core. These are used for steering wheels, spa head rests, and automotive dashboards.
Elastomers (PU Cast, PU Spraycast)
Elastomers are solid urethane components which offer excellent flexibility, elastisicity, chemical and abrasion resistant properties. They can also range from very soft (fishing lures, sorbothane, rubber bands), to very hard (golf ball covers, bone models).
Single Component (PU Bond, PU Coat)
Single component urethanes are widely used in the adhesive coating and sealant industries. They work by the moisture in the atmosphere reacting with the isocyanate groups that are available to complete the cross-linking reaction. They offer exceptional adhesion to a variety of substrates, good chemical and abrasion resistance as well as being strong and flexible.
Activators (PU Active)
Pacific Urethanesl provides a unique system solution to customers by offering “activator” packages. The activator blend is based on a ‘concentrate’ concept whereby we provide the customer with a blend that contains all the intellectual property in its components. We then educate the customer on how they can blend their own systems on site.
This concept is best suited to international customers; it not only allows them to minimize stock levels but also provides opportunity to meet minimum “local content” guidelines for their systems, and avoid import taxes. |
